Background to the claim

Te Ātiawa lodged a claim into the Waitangi Tribunal Wai 607 June 1996. The Waitangi Tribunal hearings were finally completed in 2004 and the Tribunal began releasing the (preliminary) reports in stages from 2007 onwards. The reports can be found can be located on the Waitangi Tribunal Website.

In 2005 Te Ātiawa joined with Ngäti Tama, Ngāti Rarua, Ngāti Kōata and Wakatū Incorporation to form the large natural group “Tainui Taranaki ki te Tonga” as we have claims against the forest we are entitled to Crown Forestry Rental funding.

There is one fundamental difference between the Waitangi Tribunal and Office of Treaty Settlement processes. Under the Treaty of Waitangi Act 1975, any Māori can make a claim to the Waitangi Tribunal. However, for direct negotiations, the Crown will only negotiate with mandated negotiators, and strongly prefers to negotiate with large natural groupings as it believes that larger groupings make the process of settlement easier to manage and work through, and helps with overlapping interests.
