Register of Members of Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu)

Please read the following terms and conditions before registering

 

Definitions

Members of Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu) means persons who affiliate to Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu) through descent from a primary ancestor of Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu), but does not include Whangai who do not descend from a primary ancestor of Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu).

An Adult Member of Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu) means a member of Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu) who is 18 years of age or over.

Who may register:

  1. Adult Members of Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu) on their own behalf or by their legal guardian; and
  2. Members of Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu), who are not Adult Members of Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu), by their parent or legal guardian on their behalf; and
  3. Members of Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu) by an Adult Member of Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu) who, in the opinion of the Whakapapa Committee, stands in the stead of a parent of that person;

 

You must be able to trace your descent from:

  1. One or more of the original Ngati Awa / Te Ātiawa signatories to the Treaty of Waitangi in Te Tau Ihu; and / or
  2. One or more of the Ngati Awa / Te Atiawa owners who were listed as beneficiaries of the Maori Reserves Lands in Te Tau Ihu (Tenths Reserves, Occupation Reserves, Original Native Title Blocks); and / or
  3. One or more of the Ngati Awa / Te Atiawa persons who have maintained ahi kaa in any district within the rohe of Te Ātiawa Manawhenua Ki Te Tau Ihu Trust, as established by the New Zealand Census records, Native Land Court and Maori Land Court records and other archives.

 

Other

Whakapapa will be verified by a Register Validation Committee. Further information verifying affiliation to Ngati Awa / Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu) through descent from a primary ancestor of Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu) may be requested by the Trust.

Confirmation of membership will be sent to you, with your Te Ātiawa Manawhenua Ki Te Tau Ihu Trust registration number. Should your application for registration be declined you may dispute the decision.

You should complete as much of the Application for Membership Form as you can. If you do not provide sufficient information your application for registration may be delayed or declined.
