About the Trust


 

Establishment of Te Ātiawa Manawhenua Ki Te Tau Ihu Trust


  1. Te Ātiawa Manawhenua Ki Te Tau Ihu Trust is incorporated under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957 and is so incorporated to represent the people of Te Ᾱtiawa descent who whakapapa to Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka-ā-Maui (Top of the South Island).  The Trust was established in 1993.

Te Ātiawa Manawhenua Ki Te Tau Ihu Trust (Te Ātiawa Trust) has been established to receive, hold, manage and administer the Trust Fund for every Charitable Purpose benefiting Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu) whether it relates to the relief of poverty, the advancement of education or religion or any other matter beneficial to the community of Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu) and all the Members of Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu) irrespective of where those members reside.

  5. Te Ātiawa Trustees are comprised of 5 representatives who are resident within the Nelson and Tasman Rohe and 5 representatives who are resident within the Marlborough Rohe. Nine Trustees must be Adult Registered Members. One Trustee may be an Adult, non-Te Ᾱtiawa member.

  7. All Trustees represent the interests of all Members of Te Ātiawa (Te Tau Ihu), irrespective of where they reside.

The Trust has had the responsibility, since 1994, for advancing Treaty of Waitangi claims on behalf of Iwi in Te Tau Ihu (Wai 605). The substantive hearings process for all Te Tau Ihu Iwi has been completed, a series of reports were released by the Waitangi Tribunal to aid negotiations between Te Tau Ihu Iwi and the Crown. It is envisaged that Te Tau Ihu Iwi (including Te Ātiawa) and the Crown will work towards a settlement of Treaty of Waitangi claims, by April 2011.
